You can work in a team of two or individually to create a video story that is between 2 and 4 minutes. Some people prefer working alone; some people prefer collaboration. The assignment is manageable for either one or two persons.

However, this is NOT to encourage you to meet in person with your partner to finish this project. Instead, try creative ways to collaborate remotely, such as taking on different roles to finish this project and using Google Doc to plan together.

  1. You have about one week to decide whom you want to work with if you prefer to have a partner. Two of you have receive the grade for this assignment.
  2. If you would like to work in a team, please email me who your partner is by Monday, April 27, the day we move onto the video production module.

Visualizing Information: Just “telling a good story” or pretty visuals is insufficient…

More and more, users–not advertising–are the primary source of revenue for media outlets.

Growing your audience is key for media survival. The user should be primary when considering visuals.

Just “telling a good story” is insufficient to merit a user’s investment of time and cash. Visuals must be worthwhile, add value to the story, and be worth the user’s time to view.

Media content creators should be starting with:

What does the user want to know?

What problem does the user want solved or illustrated?

How can a visualization illustrate or solve an issue for the user?

These are also the essential questions you need to think about for your Google My Maps project.


🗺️Visualization with Mapping

In our next assignment blog post 7, we will learn Google My Maps. Suggested deadline is this Sunday Apr. 26 by 11:59 p.m. You will have time to work on this project on Wednesday.

In your future media career, you may be asked to help users understand and consume location-based stories, such as telling people where particular events are occurring in a given area (note this is relevant to both journalism and public relations).

  • For this assignment, you will brainstorm a specific problem/issue that you want to address for a target audience, and this problem/issue needs to be presented on your blog using text, photos, links, and a Google My Maps that you created.
  • To do this, you need to brainstorm, research, and write about this issue that somehow includes a map that you created using Google My Maps.
  • The blog post tone can be journalistic (objective) or conversational (opinionated) in nature.
  • Your blog post must include at least one human source that you interview about the topic. You should weave this interviewee’s direct quotes, partial quotes, and paraphrased information throughout your blog post, where it is relevant and appropriate to do so. Considering the challenges of conducting in-person interviews now, I recommend interviewing an individual you are currently living with, such as family members and friends.   • You need to include at least 5 “pins” on the map. The maximum number of “pins” is 8.

  • “Real World Example”: The Best Brunches In Denver Right Now: This post is within the length that your post needs to be. It also covers a topic that you can also cover. The voice and tone is conversational and personal, which is allowed for this blog post. Of course, your blog post needs to have a Google My Maps that you created.
  • Mary Rucinksi takes a journalistic approach to report on Everything You Need to Know to Vote in Laramie: Mary does the background research to help out voters in Laramie discover their voting district and location.
  • Ivy Engel takes a colloquial and person approach to report on the Best Places to East on Long Beach Island: Ivy uses her personal experience to guide her top list of best places to eat during the summer on Long Beach Island.

How to Create a Google My Maps map?

  1. Use your Google account to sign into Google My Maps
  2. Create a new map
  3. Edit map title and description
  4. Select a “Base map” that works for your coverage.
  5. Search for the locations
  6. Drop pins (Select ➕Add to map from the search results)
  7. Edit pins for title of location, rank or no. of location, brief description of location, icons, color, and finally, add a photo of location of your own or through “Google Image Search” on photo uploading page.
  8. Make the map public
    1. Click on Share
    2. Change “Private” to “Public on the web”
  9. Embed the map into a blog post
    1. Click on the three vertically-stacked dots on Google My Maps
    2. Select “embed map” and copy the HTML code
    3. Go to your WordPress blog post (in the block editor mode), add a block, find “Formatting” and then “Custom HTML.” Alternatively, you can directly search for “embed”.
    4. Finally, paste the copied HTML code into this block.
    5. Preview to make sure the map is displayed correctly.

Steps for Blog Post 7

  1. Thoroughly review the assignment document and know the expectations
  2. Consult with me via email about your proposed blog post and map
  3. Create your map
  4. Conduct your interview (in any format)
  5. Write the blog post
  6. Embed the map in the blog post

Before you start your map, you must brainstorm and research an issue that you would like to write about that somehow includes a map that you created using Google My Maps.

Focus on what problem that your map solves for the user. Or, focus on what important information that your map provides the user.
